Revenue attribution: money traced to the visit that started it

Visitor counts tell you where people come from. Revenue attribution tells you which of those places bring people who pay.

The formula

Revenue per source = payments of buyers whose first visit came from that source

An example

Google sent 9,700 visitors and 108 of them later paid €4,438. Reddit sent 600 and 14 paid €410. Per visitor, Reddit is worth less, but its buyers pay sooner.

How Sumly counts it

  • The site's first-party cookie (or the app's install id) is passed to checkout as sumly_visitor_id.
  • Each payment counts for the source, campaign, country and device of that person's first visit.
  • Funnels can end in a payment, so you see how many visitors got all the way to paying.

Mistakes that make it lie

  • Giving the sale to the last click only, which forgets how the person found you.
  • Comparing sources by visitors when the question is money.

Questions

Does it need cookies from third parties?

No. The cookie belongs to your own site, and no IP address is stored.

Does it work for apps?

Yes. The iOS, Android and React Native SDKs keep an install id that you pass to RevenueCat or Stripe the same way.
