Paddle Billing MRR and revenue by traffic source

Connect Paddle Billing with an API key limited to reading. Sumly counts what you earn after tax and Paddle's fee, in the currency Paddle pays you in.

What Sumly reads

  • Subscriptions, with the price each subscriber will really pay at the next renewal
  • Completed transactions, with tax and Paddle's fee taken off
  • Refunds and chargebacks, from Paddle's adjustments
  • The buyer's name and country

Good to know

  • Paddle has no balance API, so the money waiting for a payout is not shown.
  • Paddle Classic is not supported, only Paddle Billing.
  • Paddle keys expire after 90 days unless you choose a longer life.

Connect Paddle in a few minutes

  1. 1In Paddle: Developer tools → Authentication → New API key.
  2. 2Give it read only: Subscriptions, Transactions, Adjustments, Customers, Addresses (Products and Prices too, for plan names). Nothing to write.
  3. 3Paddle keys expire (90 days unless you choose up to a year); paste a new one here when it does.
  4. 4To trace payments to visits, pass the visitor into checkout: customData: { sumly_visitor_id: sumly.visitorId }.

Trace each payment to its visit

Open checkout with customData: { sumly_visitor_id: sumly.visitorId }. Paddle copies it from the first transaction to the subscription and to every renewal. How attribution works.

Questions

Why is revenue lower than the checkout total?

Paddle is the merchant of record: it collects tax and keeps its fee. Sumly counts what is yours, which is what Paddle calls earnings.

Is a renewal that failed and was paid later counted?

Yes. Transactions are read by the time they last changed, so a payment completed days after the first attempt still lands on the day it was paid.
