Did a Reddit or TikTok post bring sales?

A post can bring a rush of visitors and no buyers, or a few visitors who all pay. The way to know is to follow the people it brought to the payment, not to count the visits.

Drawn with made-up numbers.

What to check, in this order

  1. 1Before you post, tag the link: a short ?ref= or UTM tags. TikTok and many apps send no referrer, so without a tag those visitors look like they typed your address.
  2. 2After the post, look at visitors from that source on the day and the day after, against an ordinary day.
  3. 3Then the payments: did people whose first visit came from the post pay, then or in the weeks after?
  4. 4If nothing was tagged, look at the day: a jump of visitors with no source, the day the post went out, is very likely the post.

Where Sumly shows it

  • Revenue by source, campaign and ref link: each buyer counts for the place their first visit came from.
  • Mentions from Reddit, Hacker News, Bluesky, YouTube and the web on the chart, and the visitors from that place that day.
  • A mark where a source jumped, naming the post that was out that day.
  • The UTM builder makes a tagged link for each post or creator.

Visits are not the answer

A post on a busy subreddit can bring thousands of visitors who read and leave. A short video can bring forty people who all start a trial. Only the payments say which one worked.

And people rarely buy on the first visit. A buyer who first came from the post and paid two weeks later still came from the post, which is why the first visit is what counts.

Mistakes that make it lie

  • Judging the post on its first day. Count the payments over the following weeks.
  • Posting the bare address in a bio or a video. Without a tag, most app visitors arrive with no source at all.
  • Giving every post the same tag. One tag per post, or per creator, keeps them apart.

Posts and sales questions

How does Sumly know a payment came from the post?

The script keeps the source of a visitor's first visit, and carries the visitor into checkout. When they pay, the payment counts for that first source, whether that was a tag, a referrer or a ref link.

What about people who saw the post and came back later by typing my address?

If they visited from the post first, on the same browser, they still count for it. If their first visit was the typed address, they count as direct, and no tool can see the post behind it.

Does Sumly find the posts by itself?

It searches Reddit, Hacker News, Bluesky, YouTube and the web for your name every day and puts what it finds on the chart. TikTok is not searched.
