Sumly vs OpenPanel

OpenPanel is open-source web and product analytics, with revenue you send it as events. Sumly reads subscriptions and payments from your billing and the app stores, and sets its own visitor analytics beside them.

Where OpenPanel is the better choice

OpenPanel suits a team that wants Mixpanel-style product analytics it can host itself, and is happy to send revenue as events from its own code.

  • Open source under the AGPL, with a free self-hosted edition and no event limits there.
  • Deeper product analytics: cohorts, session replay and SDKs for React Native, Swift, Kotlin and many server languages.
  • Tracking without cookies, and AI observability for the model calls your product makes.
  • Unlimited sites and team members on every plan; you pay only for events, from $2.50 a month.

Where Sumly fits

Sumly suits a founder who wants revenue read from the billing system and the app stores, with renewals, refunds and churn counted, and the visits that brought each buyer beside it.

  • You want MRR, churn, refunds and fees read from Stripe, Paddle, RevenueCat or the stores, not sent from your code.
  • Some of your revenue comes from the App Store or Google Play.
  • You want ad and creator costs set against what the people they brought have paid.

Trying Sumly next to OpenPanel

The two scripts can run on the same pages, so a few weeks of both is the fair way to judge.

Sumly has no import of past visits from OpenPanel or any other analytics tool, so its visitor history starts the day the script is added. Revenue history does not wait: it is read from your billing, up to three years back.

  1. 1Create a project in Sumly and add its one script tag next to OpenPanel's.
  2. 2In the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, call sumly.consent(true) once the visitor agrees. Until then Sumly counts without a cookie.
  3. 3Connect your payment provider with a key that can only read, where the provider offers one.
  4. 4Where you pass OpenPanel's device id into checkout metadata, pass sumly_visitor_id too, so each payment is traced to the visit that started it.
  5. 5From an app's server, send screens and events to /api/v1/events with the same user id RevenueCat knows.

Visitor numbers in two tools rarely match exactly. Each decides in its own way what counts as a bot or a new visitor. Look at whether the trends agree.

Sumly and OpenPanel: questions

Does OpenPanel show revenue?

Yes, as revenue events. Its docs show calling op.revenue from your payment webhook, with the visitor's device id or profile id, so revenue shows by source and user. It does not read your billing, so a renewal or refund counts only when your code sends it. Sumly reads them from the payment provider.

Can I host Sumly myself?

No. Sumly is a hosted service and is not open source. If self-hosting matters to you, OpenPanel is open source under the AGPL and its self-hosted edition is free.

Does Sumly have mobile SDKs like OpenPanel?

Not yet. A React Native and Expo SDK is being rebuilt. Today an app's server sends screens and events through Sumly's server API, and app revenue comes from RevenueCat, the App Store or Google Play.

Does Sumly import my OpenPanel history?

No. Visitor history in Sumly starts when its script is added. Your revenue history is read from your billing provider, so that part is full from the first day.

What does each cost?

Sumly is free for one project, $9 a month on Starter and from $19 on Growth, with a 14-day trial. OpenPanel Cloud starts at $2.50 a month for 5,000 events, with a 30-day trial, according to its site on 3 November 2026, and its self-hosted edition is free.
