Where Fathom is the better choice

Fathom suits a site owner, or an agency with many client sites, who wants simple web analytics with no cookies and no consent banner, and its Google Analytics history brought along.

  • No cookies at all, so its analytics needs no consent banner anywhere.
  • Visits from the EU are processed in the EU by default, and one script address sends all traffic through the EU.
  • At least 50 sites on every plan, and more on the bigger ones.
  • An importer that brings over your GA4 history.

Where Sumly fits

Sumly suits a founder who wants simple visitor counts too, but mainly wants them tied to subscription revenue from the billing system and the app stores.

  • You sell subscriptions and want MRR, churn, refunds and fees read from your billing, not sent from your site as event values.
  • Some of your revenue comes from the App Store or Google Play.
  • You want ad and creator costs set against what the people they brought have paid.

Trying Sumly next to Fathom

You do not have to choose on the first day. The two scripts can run on the same pages, and a few weeks of both is the fair way to judge.

Sumly has no import of past visits from Fathom or any other analytics tool, so its visitor history starts the day the script is added. Revenue history does not wait: it is read from your billing, up to three years back.

  1. 1Create a project in Sumly and add its one script tag next to Fathom's.
  2. 2In the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, call sumly.consent(true) once the visitor agrees. Until then Sumly counts without a cookie.
  3. 3Where you call fathom.trackEvent for a step you care about, send it to Sumly too with sumly.track('signup', { plan: 'pro' }).
  4. 4Connect your payment provider with a key that can only read, where the provider offers one.
  5. 5For a checkout made in your own code, pass sumly_visitor_id in its metadata, so each payment is traced to the visit that started it.
  6. 6Connect RevenueCat, the App Store or Google Play if you also sell in an app.

Visitor numbers in two tools rarely match exactly. Each decides in its own way what counts as a bot or a new visitor. Look at whether the trends agree.

Sumly and Fathom: questions

Is Sumly privacy-friendly like Fathom?

Sumly uses no third-party cookies and stores no IP address. In the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland it sets no cookie until the visitor agrees, and counts without one until then. Raw visits are kept 25 months. Fathom sets no cookie at all, and processes visits from the EU in the EU.

Can Fathom show MRR?

Not from billing. As its docs describe it, revenue is a value in cents that your site sends with an event, and filtering by a campaign shows the conversions it brought. Sumly reads subscriptions and payments from the billing provider, so renewals, refunds and cancellations count even when nobody visits the site.

Which is better for app revenue?

Sumly reads the App Store, Google Play and RevenueCat; we did not find them on Fathom's pages. When someone comes through your site and taps its store button, Sumly ties the install to that visit: exactly on Android, as a marked estimate on iOS (a hashed IP matched within the hour). Their app payments then count for the source they first came from.

Does Sumly import my Fathom or Google Analytics history?

No. Visitor history in Sumly starts when its script is added. Your revenue history is read from your billing provider, so that part is full from the first day. Fathom can import your GA4 history, if that matters to you.

Can I run both scripts?

Yes. They do not interfere with each other, and running both for a while is the easiest way to compare.

What does each cost?

Sumly is $9 a month on Starter and from $19 on Growth, with a 14-day trial and no card. Fathom starts at $15 a month for 100,000 pageviews, with at least 50 sites, a 7-day trial that asks for a card, and no free plan, according to its site on 6 November 2026.
