Sumly vs Matomo

Matomo is open-source web analytics you can host yourself or use in its EU cloud, with ecommerce orders your site sends it. Sumly reads subscriptions and payments from your billing and the app stores, and sets its own visitor analytics beside them.

Where Matomo is the better choice

Matomo suits a team that wants full web analytics it owns, often hosted on its own servers, as a replacement for Google Analytics, and is happy to send orders from its site.

  • Open source under the GPL v3, with a free self-hosted edition and no limit on users or hits there.
  • Its cloud keeps data in Frankfurt, and self-hosted you choose where it lives.
  • A wider toolset: heatmaps, session recordings, A/B tests, form analytics, cohorts and a tag manager.
  • It imports your Google Analytics history, and has a free mobile app for iOS and Android.

Where Sumly fits

Sumly suits a founder who wants revenue read from the billing system and the app stores, with renewals, refunds and churn counted, and the visits that brought each buyer beside it.

  • You want MRR, churn, refunds and fees read from Stripe, Paddle, RevenueCat or the stores, not sent from your site.
  • Some of your revenue comes from the App Store or Google Play.
  • You want ad and creator costs set against what the people they brought have paid.

Trying Sumly next to Matomo

You do not have to choose on the first day. The two scripts can run on the same pages, and a few weeks of both is the fair way to judge.

Sumly has no import of past visits from Matomo or any other analytics tool, so its visitor history starts the day the script is added. Revenue history does not wait: it is read from your billing, up to three years back.

  1. 1Create a project in Sumly and add its one script tag next to Matomo's.
  2. 2In the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, call sumly.consent(true) once the visitor agrees. Until then Sumly counts without a cookie.
  3. 3If you track events in Matomo for funnels, send them with sumly.track('signup', { plan: 'pro' }).
  4. 4Connect your payment provider with a key that can only read, where the provider offers one.
  5. 5For a checkout made in your own code, pass sumly_visitor_id in its metadata, so each payment is traced to the visit that started it.

Visitor numbers in two tools rarely match exactly. Each decides in its own way what counts as a bot or a new visitor. Look at whether the trends agree.

Sumly and Matomo: questions

Can I host Sumly myself?

No. Sumly is a hosted service and is not open source. If self-hosting matters to you, Matomo On-Premise is open source under the GPL v3 and free to host.

Can Matomo show MRR?

Not from billing. Its docs describe tracking an order from your site's JavaScript on the order confirmation page, and they do not mention subscriptions or refunds. Sumly reads subscriptions and payments from the payment provider, so renewals, refunds and cancellations count even when nobody visits the site.

Is Sumly privacy-friendly like Matomo?

Sumly uses no third-party cookies and stores no IP address. In the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland it sets no cookie until the visitor agrees, and counts without one until then. Matomo can also track with cookies turned off, and you can host it on your own servers; Sumly cannot be hosted yourself.

Does Sumly import my Matomo history?

No. Visitor history in Sumly starts when its script is added. Your revenue history is read from your billing provider, so that part is full from the first day.

Can I run both scripts?

Yes. They do not interfere with each other, and running both for a while is the easiest way to compare.

What does each cost?

Sumly is $9 a month on Starter (3 projects, 50,000 visits) and from $19 on Growth (500,000 visits a month, up to 5 million), with a 14-day trial and no card. Matomo Cloud starts at €22 ($26) a month for 50,000 hits, with a 21-day trial and no card, according to its site on 6 November 2026. Matomo On-Premise is free, and its paid plugin bundles start at €230 a month billed yearly.
